Data Matrix (sometimes spelled datamatrix) is a two-dimensional bar code, which can store as many as 50 data characters and the additional high-level control characters required for item marking. The 2D Data Matrix bar code symbol is square or rectangular and can be represented in a range of cell sizes. The Data Matrix marking can be applied in many ways as long as it remains permanent through the lifecycle and not damaged or destroyed in use. UID compliance requires that all UID labels, marks and tags use a Data Matrix bar code. UID Comply!®, the UID lifecycle management software suite, is used to create Data Matrix bar codes and manage the UID data.
This illustration shows the breakout of UID data components, in black, with the necessary special control characters properly inserted and shown in red and blue.

MIL STD 130N provides more detail and specifications for 2D Data Matrix Bar Codes.
